Canvas - White Tailed Deer

from $40.00
The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is one of the most widespread and recognizable large mammals in North America, named for the conspicuous white underside of its tail which it "flags" by raising it when startled or fleeing. These adaptable herbivores range from southern Canada to Central America, thriving in diverse habitats including forests, farmlands, and even suburban areas. Their coat changes seasonally, shifting from a reddish-brown in summer to a thicker, grayish-brown for winter insulation. Only the males, or bucks, typically grow and shed antlers each year, which they use to spar for dominance during the autumn breeding season, known as the rut. Primarily crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), white-tailed deer are renowned for their agility, capable of running up to 30 miles per hour and leaping over high obstacles to evade predators.
